How to Make Your Handmade Soap Last Longer

Handmade soap is made without synthetic hardeners, so it's softer and more luxurious than commercial bars — and it can dissolve faster if it's left sitting in water. The good news: a few tiny habits can make a bar last weeks longer.

1. Let it dry between uses

This is the single biggest factor. A bar that sits in a puddle turns to mush. Use a well-drained soap dish — one with ridges or slats — so water runs off and air reaches all sides.

2. Keep it out of the direct stream

Store your bar away from the shower spray so it isn't slowly melting under running water the whole time you bathe.

3. Use a washcloth or loofah

Work up the lather on a cloth, loofah or your hands rather than rubbing the bar endlessly on your skin. You'll use less soap and get a richer lather.

4. Cut big bars in half

Using a large bar? Cut it in two and keep one half stored dry. A smaller working bar dries faster and the spare stays fresh.

5. Store spares cool and airy

Keep unopened bars in a cool, dry, ventilated spot (not a steamy bathroom). Natural soap even improves with a little curing time.
